Job Description

Join our renowned client's team as the Architectural Specification Writer, where you'll play a pivotal role in crafting, refining, and enhancing master specifications for diverse educational facilities. Bring your expertise in construction products, materials, and methodologies to the forefront as you collaborate and share insights on best practices, sustainable design, material details, and system functionalities with your peers. Lead dynamic project teams, guiding the coordination and preparation of detailed Project Manuals. An in-depth understanding of architectural design and project delivery processes will be your foundation for success in this engaging and impactful position.

Employment Type: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt

Work Schedule: Flexible, hybrid model available, with a requirement of 24 hours/week in-office

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Engage with master specification protocols, offering constructive feedback on processes, documentation standards, quality benchmarks, and sustainability objectives.
  • Modify Divisions 00 & 01 documents to accommodate diverse owner specifications and project delivery methodologies.
  • Function as a reference for technical information, products, materials, and building systems.
  • Draft specifications utilizing SpecLink for projects with varying uses, occupancies, and construction types.
  • Educate and mentor design staff in specification protocols, processes, and standards.
  • Collaborate with project teams and consultants to align specification efforts.
  • Work with internal departments to craft technical specifications for unique products and scenarios.
  • Guide technical and production teams to align specifications with construction drawings, ensuring cohesive construction documents.
  • Clarify to the team the technical and specification implications tied to design choices.
  • Maintain awareness of project and client-specific standards, inclusive of regional and climate considerations, and their effects on specifications.
  • Encourage and support the firm's sustainability initiatives.
  • Conduct drawing reviews at each phase to ensure language consistency with specifications.
  • Handle evaluations and responses for product substitution inquiries.
  • Facilitate quality checks on outsourced specifications.
  • Contribute to quality management processes and validate compliance in product research with applicable codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with product representatives to enhance new product selections.
  • Assist project teams in preparing addenda and related documentation during construction administration.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Professional degree in architecture from an accredited program or relevant work experience
  • Five+ years of experience in specification production with profound understanding in:
  • Building technology, product research, and specification
  • Sustainability, integrated design, and LEED guidelines
  • Building code proficiency and application to various facility types
  • Membership in Construction Specification Institute (CSI)
  • Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) certification preferred
  • Active Architectural or Engineering License preferred
  • LEED® AP with Specialty or GA (Green Associate) is advantageous
  • Basic familiarity with BIM software preferred
  • Strong expertise in architectural design, engineering integration, design trends, construction techniques, material applications, and supplier suitability
  • Knowledge of construction procedures and timelines
  • Capability in defining appropriate building envelope components
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu software preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office software preferred
  • Familiarity with SpecLink software beneficial
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and work quality are mandatory
  • Proactive approach and teamwork are essential
  • Eagerness to expand knowledge in sustainable design, construction materials, engineering disciplines, and construction techniques
