College Laboratory Technician - School of Music
GENERAL DUTIES
Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.
Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials
Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards
Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities
Manages equipment and materials inventories.

The Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College offers a curriculum in classical conservatory training. Reporting to the Chair of the Music Department, the College Laboratory Technicians (CLT) will provide technical support for our undergraduate and graduate programs. This support will include managing and staffing our many performance activities but also maintaining classroom A/V systems and physical resources like desks. Support will also be needed for our music production program, including managing software and other recording technology resources. The CLT, in collaboration with other departmental stakeholders, will determine materials, equipment, supplies, etc. that will be allocated and assigned to support courses, sections and faculty research; will designate appropriate protocols to be followed; and will assign projects. Work hours may include early mornings or evenings and occasional weekends.
Primary responsibilities include:
Oversee concert production/large ensemble activities
Collaborate on concert, event, and recital scheduling
Oversee on-site production of events. Assign staff to department events
Work department events
Coordinate rooms for rehearsals
Maintain YouTube Channel
Manage live streaming of concert events
Maintain QR code for concert programs
Assist recording engineer with digital archive of recorded events
Staff and manage rental events
Maintain Facilities
Maintain and/or collaborate with college departments to maintain concert event space streaming systems; classroom A/V systems; classroom computers; lighting; physical infrastructure; lockers (in coordination with office staff); instrument inventory (in coordination with music ed, arch manager, office staff, repair techs)
Manage Recording Studio
Collaborate with Music Production coordinator to identify recording studio needs
Maintain recording studios
Maintain Rm 225H and ProTools installation/troubleshooting
Work with Music Production instructors/provide equipment for classes
Work with Music Production coordinator to help implement any upgrades or maintenance
Handle Purchasing
Identify needed purchases, including tools, supplies, microphones, theatrical lighting, etc.
Secure quotes and work with office staff to obtain materials
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
2 years of experience working in stage production/management
Demonstrated capacity to research, maintain, and expand the functionality of the classroom and recording technology equipment
Proven ability to work in a team environment focused on service to an educational community.
Evidence of strong administrative, interpersonal, communication, and supervisory skills.
COMPENSATION
$56,484 - $60,829
BENEFITS
CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification. Employees are also offered pension and Tax-Deferred Savings Plans. Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
