Job Description

Social-Justice-Oriented Executive Director Wanted at Community-Based Org

Salary range: $65,000 to $70,000 first year

Are You the Missing Piece?

This one-of-a-kind community-powered arts and social justice hub is looking for its next bold, brilliant Executive Director: A grassroots coalition builder and a people-powered leader with serious chops in advocacy, non-profit operations, and creative vision. If your heart beats for equity, your brain thrives on strategy, and your hands are ready to dig into the soil of a historic neighborhood (sometimes literally—they also have community gardens and are urban agriculture-focused), then keep reading.

This is your opportunity to helm a vibrant, interdisciplinary, justice-driven arts organization that fuses environmental justice, anti-racism, and community healing with radical creativity and grassroots action. From producing radio shows, to harvesting vegetables, to hosting climate justice panels, to controversial film screenings, to navigating budgets and historic buildings—this place does it all. And they need you to bring it all together and be the unifying voice and presence of this org.

That’s right: You’ll be the face and voice of a beloved local institution with national reach. You’ll manage a small, mighty team and steward a fiercely supportive volunteer base. You’ll stabilize operations, grow funding, elevate bold programming, and steward the physical campus—a repurposed church and living, breathing sanctuary for arts, science, and activism. No two days will look alike. And that’s exactly the point.

What's it going to take to score an interview?

  • You’ve got 3+ years of senior nonprofit leadership experience, and ideally a track record of raising funds across grassroots, private, and government channels.
  • You’ve led teams (not just interns) and managed complex budgets (think $250K–$1M+). Plus, you can juggle the beautiful complexities of nonprofit life with grace and authority.
  • You know your way around grants, audits, 990s, and QuickBooks —but you’re just as comfortable at a community event as you are in a spreadsheet.
  • You’ve got fire in your belly for social justice, racial equity, and environmental action —and you’re not afraid to take bold stances when the work demands it.
  • You’ve managed a physical space (gallery, community center, historic venue, etc.) and know that sometimes, the job includes calling the plumber. You’re cool with that.
  • You’re a coalition builder and bridge-maker, especially with marginalized and underrepresented communities. Bonus points if your programming experience spans art, ecology, food, health, or science.

You should take this meeting because ...

…this is a chance to lead a boundary-pushing, justice-driven, media-meets-movement organization with deep roots and sky-high potential. You’ll be supported by a crew of passionate volunteers, a dedicated staff, and a board eager to partner on your vision. You’ll be invited to grow—and yes, if you crush your first year, your own comp will grow too.

You’ll stand at the intersection of art, science, and organizing, and your leadership will help shape a more equitable, connected, and creative future. Ready to lead from the frontlines of change? Get in touch with us today!
