Cafe Yaya is the second concept from the team behind Galit, a Middle Eastern Restaurant in the Lincoln Park neighborhood in Chicago. Cafe Yaya is owned and operated by Chef Zachary Engel and Andrés Clavero. The "all day cafe" will include a robust pastry program led by Pastry Chef Mary Eder-McClure that will include breakfast pastries, fresh breads, and bistro desserts as well as desserts for our upstairs event space. The beverage program will be thoughtfully curated by Beverage Director Scott Stroemer. The restaurant is a space for community: hospitality professionals, guests and suppliers will come together and celebrate food and drink in a respectful, friendly, and caring manner. The menu focuses on a seasonal and localized approach to approachable cafe dishes from the sidewalk bistros of Paris and Tel Aviv.

Position Overview:

All Server/Baristas will be trained on counter service, assisting guests at the Toast terminal and placing orders as well as support protocol with the expectation that job descriptions will grow and change according to the needs of the cafe as they become apparent. We’re seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Server/Barista to join our team. In this role, you’ll craft high-quality coffee and beverages, assist with the café’s day-to-night transition, and contribute to delivering exceptional guest experiences. All of these roles assist servers and other Front of House employees in the service of all guests who are patronizing the restaurant, running food, clearing plates, resetting, watering, and any duty that manager on duty task as needed to ensure a seamless guest experience. The Food Runner & Server Assistant will report to the General Manager and Managers (“Managers”) and, at times, the Executive Chef and Sous Chefs (“Chefs”). Above all, the Server Assistant must do all to contribute to a positive work environment as set forth by the culture and values of New Wave Hospitality.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and serve a variety of coffee and tea beverages, including espresso-based drinks, specialty beverages, and seasonal creations.
  • Provide warm and personalized service, helping guests navigate the menu and offering thoughtful recommendations.
  • Perform opening duties and/or support the café’s transition from daytime to evening service.
  • Operate and maintain coffee equipment, ensuring precision, cleanliness, and functionality throughout the day.
  • Collaborate with the bakery and kitchen teams to ensure smooth service and efficient communication.
  • Assist with daily tasks such as restocking, cleaning, and maintaining an organized workspace.
  • Stay engaged with menu updates, including new pastries, beverages, and evening offerings.
  • Receive and process payments. 
  • Contribute ideas for seasonal beverage options and other ways to enhance the café experience.
  • Help to clear dishes from tables, including glassware, silver, share plates, and any other items on table that are not being used
  • Reset tables as guests depart including wiping, resetting, and cleaning surrounding area so table is ready for next guest
  • Run food and beverage to guests in a thoughtful and caring manner

Qualifications:

  • Previous server, barista or specialty coffee experience preferred.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to different service styles throughout the day.
  • A strong attention to detail and commitment to consistency in beverage preparation.
  • Team-oriented, proactive, and enthusiastic about hospitality.
  • Food safety certification or willingness to obtain one.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Flexibility to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • A passion for coffee, food, and creating memorable guest experiences.
